Jo is spending the day at home, ignoring Danny’s texts. Kyle tries to talk to her about it but she says she just needs to take a day off from everything.

Karen and Danny talk about having to get him into another school so he won’t be violating his patrol and Danny offers to get a job in the meantime to help pay the bills.

Lacey’s friends are ignoring her and she remembers a time with Regina when they weren’t talking to Phoebe and Regina tells them about a fight the two had in which she says Phoebe scratched her arm.

Lacey tries to talk to Archie and apologize to him about Danny, but Archie is still hurt.

Rico talks to Jo and says how much the video has messed up Lacey’s life but Jo says she no longer cares.

Danny meets Lacey outside of school and says he’s going over to Jo’s house to make things better and asks Lacey to come with him.

The PI Marilyn Rossi insists Kyle drag the lake again and says that investigating Marna Inc and the missing town hall files is a waste of time. Kyle hasn’t yet told her about Karen having been the one who threw the necklace away.

Danny and Lacey try to apologize to Jo but she is furious at their lying. Danny tries to take the blame away from Lacey but Jo says she’s sick of his excuses. Lacey lets slip that Rico also knew about the video and Jo tells them all to leave.

Kyle suggests the Masterson family all go out to a movie and Jo agrees.

Karen asks her boss for some overtime and he agrees and gives her a project to work on.

Jo runs into Tyler at the movie theater and he invites her to come over to his house and hang with his friends. She asks her parents for permission and leaves with him.

Danny sneaks into Lacey’s room and encourages her to crash a party the soccer team is throwing, saying he has a plan to fix things for her.

Rico drops by the Masterson’s to get his backpack and Tess suggests he wait for Jo to come home.

Lacey goes to the diner where the soccer party is. Her friends and Archie all cold shoulder her but she refuses to leave. She sends a text to Danny, who says he’ll be by in five and instructs her to say exactly what they rehearsed.

ep11 pc2Danny shows up at the party and picks a fight with Archie, who makes a veiled threat that insinuates he had something to do with Cole and the poisoning. Lacey stands up and publicly tells Danny that hooking up with him was her stupidest mistake and that she wishes he had never come back to town. Danny leaves. Later Archie comes over to her and she apologizes for everything again and this time he accepts it. She asks Archie about what he said earlier and he admits he and Scott poisoned Cole to get Danny off the team. Lacey sees Cole getting a text message and then leaving.

Tyler and Jo watch a movie together and joke around. Then they kiss and start to get intimate but Jo stops and leaves. Before she leaves Tyler tells her he’s crazy about her and that she has to move on from Danny.

Kyle gets a call from the police station and leaves abruptly.

Cole and Danny meet up and Cole finally admits that Archie must have poisoned him.

Danny gets a text from Jo asking to meet her at the park.

Cole comes back to the party and accuses Archie. Archie denies it but Lacey says he just confessed the poisoning to her. Cole quits the team. Lacey also tells Sarita it’s unfair to use Regina to shame her and then walks out.

Karen shows her boss some errors in his paper work that proves he’s been doing some dishonest financing and Karen threatens to tell the IRS.

Danny meets up with Jo who says she loves him and asks if he could ever feel the same way. He says he would never risk their friendship for that and then admits he still has feelings for Lacey.

At the police station Kyle is told they found Regina’s murder weapon in the lake and that Danny’s finger prints are all over it. Rossi presses for Danny to be arrested immediately. Kyle calls Tess and tells her about the discovery.

ep11 pc3Jo goes back to Tyler’s house and starts making out with him and the two sleep together. Afterwards she tells him it was her first time.

Danny comes home to find Karen packing their bags. She tells him the murder weapon was found with his prints and he’s shocked. She says she has money now and they’ll be alright if they run. He agrees.

Jo comes home and Rico apologies for lying. They hug and then he says he loves her and tries to kiss her but she rejects him and Rico leaves.

Phoebe visits Lacey and says she believes her about Archie. They look at an old picture of Regina with the scratch on her arm but Phoebe denies ever doing it. She remembers Regina getting out of a car with the scratch still bleeding. Phoebe didn’t see who was driving a car but Regina had stated it was a woman and Phoebe remembers a Connecticut license plate.

We see the same car in the present, being driven by Rossi. She and Kyle show up at the Desai ep11 pc4house to arrest Danny. They see Karen’s packed backs and Kyle asks her how she knew they were coming. Danny has already left the house.

Alone, Tess makes a phone call to Vikram and tells him something very bad is happening and it’s time for him to come home.

Aunt Tara’s Power

Question: How could Tara destroy Danny’s family?

tara

In this week’s episode Danny told Jo that his Aunt Tara was going to destroy his family and ruin his life. After Jo was a bit skeptical, he assured her that Tara did of the power to do so.

Which raises the question of what possibly could Aunt Tara do that could destroy the family more than having the only son put away for murdering someone. Danny being convicted for murder clearly did affect the family badly. Karen is barely keeping it together, she’s stuck in a town where she’s a pariah, she’s having money troubles, Vikram had a drinking problem and they lost Tess and Kyle who seem to have once been their closest friends. Danny’s actions seriously dented the Desai family, honestly I wouldn’t say it’d be going too far to say that in a sense it destroyed it. Even if Danny were only taking the fall for someone else, say Karen or Vikram, Danny taking the blame makes the situation almost worse for the family. And killing Tara (or taking the blame for it) certainly, as he realized when talking to Lacey in the graveyard, ruined Danny’s life.

And yet in ‘Three for the Road’ Danny said to Jo ‘I don’t know if I regret what I did’. Whether Danny is talking about killing his aunt or covering for someone else, whatever Tara was going to do to the Desai family, seems would have had a worse effect then what Danny did. Which is a pretty darn powerful statement. Danny’s actions had a terrible result on the family. Yet he’s implied that whatever Tara was going to do, would have been far worse.

So what was it?

Danny assures Jo that Tara did have the power to destroy his family. Which certainly leads one to first think the ‘power’ Tara had was knowledge about something. After all there’s that old expression ‘knowledge is power’. Tara could have been threatening to expose something.

In a previous post I speculated, in a rather darkish theory, that Danny could have been the child of Vikram and Tara. Tara revealing this would certainly have destroyed the family and possibly ruined Danny’s life more than the murder. This would also explain Tara and Vikram hating each other for something that happened in their childhood. After all, if they had first become ‘attracted’ to each other back then, they could easily have grown up to hate each other for that attraction. However this seems less likely now as we know that Vikram and Karen have lived in the area since at least high school so the possibility that Karen isn’t Danny’s real mother is much less likely.

Tara threatening to expose any form of affair between Vikram and someone else (or Karen and someone else) while destroying the family, would still have less catastrophic implications then Danny murdering his aunt, something an eleven year old could theoretically not realize but a sixteen year old, with five years to think about it, probably would and wouldn’t now be saying things like ‘I don’t know if I regret what I did’.

So that makes me go back to the ‘power’ Tara had, and also something else Danny said to Jo in the same conversation. He said that he wanted to keep her safe. Which is very different from his previous statement that he wanted to protect her. Protecting Jo from the truth could easily mean protecting her from being hurt emotionally. Keeping her safe, implies a risk of physical harm. Which either implies to me that whatever power Tara had, whatever she could do to the Desai family, she also could do to the Masterson family. Or someone else killed Tara, Danny took the fall and he believes if Jo knew who and why she would be in real danger of being killed as well. Which might explain the motive behind Regina’s murder.

Recap S1 E4: Sleeping with the Frenemy

ep4 pc1Jo visits her dad at his office and tells him about Archie lying about his alibi, but Kyle seems uninterested and says Archie’s not currently a suspect.

Karen is cleaning the house and pauses over the favorite chair of her husband and remembers Vikram and Danny watching soccer from it.

Lacey and Archie talk about her plans to have a small girls’ night at her house with Sarita and Phoebe. She then asks Archie not to get in a fight with Danny at practice. He mentions that he and the other guys will be going out to celebrate the big game tomorrow and Lacey asks why he didn’t go out and celebrate the night of Regina’s party but he claims it was because it was an out of town game.

Jo and Danny talk about the reasons Archie might have for lying about his whereabouts on the night of Regina’s murder and she suggests he should try and make friends with the soccer team so he can find out more about Archie.

Tess runs into Karen at the store, she tries to make some small talk. The two notice people looking at them and whispering about Karen and she excuses herself and walks away.

Jo runs into Lacey and her mom on the street. Her mother is so happy to see Jo she invites her to come to Lacey’s girls’ night and Jo accepts.

At the store Rico and Jo pick out snack food for her to take over to Lacey’s and Jo explains she doing this since all of Regina’s best friends will be there and hopefully she’ll learn something useful. She suggests Rico should asks Danny to hang out at the diner that night.

Regina’s mom drops by Lacey’s house and leaves her a box full of Regina’s things.

Danny does really well at practice and the coach puts him in the lineup for the game tomorrow.

Tess drops by the Desai house and invites Karen to attend a charity brunch with her the next day and Karen agrees to think about it.

At the diner, Danny and Rico are hanging out. It’s a little awkward but they both seem to be having a pretty nice time. Danny mentions that he thinks he might be making some friends on the soccer team at which point the team all shows up at the diner. Danny is clearly hurt that he wasn’t invited as well.ep4 pc2

At Lacey’s party, things are a little awkward as Sarita doesn’t like Phoebe or Jo, but Jo and Lacey are keeping things pretty police. Phoebe notices the box and asks what it is and Lacey tells them it’s some of Regina’s things.

Kyle gets a phone call saying he’s got the warrant to search the Desai house. Tess comes home and mentions inviting Karen to the brunch, saying how sorry she feels for her as Karen has turned into a social pariah. She also mentions that Jo called and that the girls’ night has turned into a sleepover.

At the sleepover, Jo and Lacey talk about Danny and what it’s like to be friends with him again. Jo says it’s very different from what it used to be, but that he talks about Lacey a lot and really misses her. After Lacey falls asleep Jo takes a look inside the box. She finds a CD titled ‘Archie’s Greatest Hits’ and puts it in the laptop. It’s a video of him playing soccer and there are captions about how good he looks etc. Jo slips the DVD into her purse but Sarita sees her.

At the soccer game Danny asks Archie if they can call truce just for the game so they can win the match.

Karen and Tess arrive at the brunch only to find that Regina’s mom has showed up as well.

Back at the game Danny scores a point. Jo tells him and Rico about the DVD and they wonder if Regina and Archie were having an affair. Sarita also tells Lacey about Jo taking something from the box.

At the brunch Karen goes over to Regina’s mom and offers her condolences but Gloria accuses Danny of being the killer and says she will do everything she can to get him expelled from the high school and hopefully back in prison. A distraught Karen leaves.

Lacey confronts Jo and asks her what she took from the box. Jo tells her both about the DVD and the fact that Archie lied about his alibi. A furious Lacey storms off.

ep4 pc3Archie  won’t work with Danny and the team loses the game because of it. In the locker room he and Danny get into an argument. Archie accuses him of killing Regina and Danny confronts with lying about his alibi. Archie admits he borrowed Scott’s car to meet with a rival school’s coach to talk about joining their team but that it’s didn’t work out. An angry team walks out and left alone, Danny smiles to himself.

Kyle shows up at Karen’s with the warrant to search the house.

Lacey confronts Archie about the DVD and he explains that Regina’s uncle was the athletic director at the school he was trying to switch to and that Regina made the DVD to try and help him. He apologies for not tell her and says he hadn’t want to say anything unless it worked out. He asks her to forgive him and she hugs him.

Danny comes home to find the police searching the house, but they don’t find anything and leave.

Jo apologies to Lacey and returns the DVD. Jo explains that she will do whatever she has to do to prove Danny’s innocence as it finally feels like she’s getting her life back and she can’t loss that.

Tess comes over to talk to Karen about the brunch but finds the house a mess from the search. Tess makes it clear she wants to be Karen’s friend.

At the diner Danny tells Rico and Jo about Regina having Tara’s necklace. He admits to not telling them before because of how it looked. Rico suggests maybe Regina really did know his motive for murdering his aunt, but Danny says no, that no one knows that. Jo says he can’t help him if he doesn’t tell them what he knows and he says that the necklace was a family heirloom, that it had been very important to his aunt Tara but that he doesn’t know why or how Regina got it but that it had nothing to do with his motive for killing his aunt. He also suggests that maybe Jo wants to take a step back for a while and he’ll figure things out on his own. Jo responds by saying someone took the necklace to make him look guilty and knew it would connect him to the crime and now they have to find out how Regina got it and where it is now. She also adds that whoever currently has it might be the person who killed her.ep4 pc4

As Karen cleans up the house she takes a moment to sit down in her husband’s chair. As she runs her hands over the arms of the chair she notices something wrong with one of the cup holders. She lifts it up anddiscovers the necklace hidden under it.

Danny and His Mother

Question: What exactly is going on between Danny and his mother?

karen

Karen Desai is a very intriguing character. She vacillates wildly between being cool, calm and in control and seeming like she’s barely keeping a handle on things. One of the most interesting aspects of her character however, is her relationship with Danny, which is strained to say the least.

Danny and Karen have an extremely interesting relationship, one that’s hard to completely understand at this point in the show. Just the way he says the word ‘mother’ sounds pointed and he’s definitely not very open with her (for instance, he’s much more communicative to Jo, even though his mother seems to be trying very hard to support him). When she tells him she was only trying to protect him, he yelled at her that he doesn’t need protection. He keeps pushing her away. When she asked about the photographs, he said not now and walked off, while whenever Jo demands answers he stays and tries to talk things through with her.

Danny has implied in the past Karen was more concerned with appearances and status then what’s best for him. So the strain in their relationship could just be chalked up to that and the fact that Danny’s been away for five years and living with his parent at this point is hard and he doesn’t exactly know how to act around her. After all, he is sometimes fairly nice to her and is polite as long as the conversation stays general.

But there are a couple of things that raises questions. The way in which he calls her ‘mother’, which can be compared to his calling her ‘mom’ in a much more natural voice in this week’s episode when he was trying to plead with her. I have read one theory in which someone suggested Karen might not be his real mother. This is a possibility since we don’t know exactly how long Danny’s family has lived in Green Grove, they could have moved there after he was born. Someone has also suggested that Tara was his real mother (the result of his Dad having an affair with Tara), which is a possibility though Tara was his father’s sister….which definitely would provide a pretty dark motive for murder and explain why the lie about Karen being his mother…however I’m not sure it’s a motive an eleven year old would really understand and so if that is the motive I don’t see Danny actually being guilty.

Which does lead to the cover-up possibility. Maybe Karen and Vikram both encouraged Danny to take the fall for one of them. Maybe Danny partially blames Karen’s need for good appearances for this, after all he certainly seems resentful of her past fondness for status.

On the couple of occasions Karen and Danny have talked about Tara, it’s seemed just a little off. For example it seems perfectly natural and understandable, that Danny would want to get rid of any photos of the woman he murdered. And yet Karen seemed to find it so bizarre that he had removed them all. And while he has talked about ‘his fault’ for what happened and ‘what he’s done’, he has yet to say point blank to her that he killed or murdered Tara.

Whatever is going on however, I get the strong impression that there’s at least some secret that Danny and his mother share. And I wouldn’t be surprised if the importance she used to place in appearances and status likely escalated events and contributed to what happened to the aunt (whether it was her turning a blind eye or hiding the truth).

Fan Theory #1

Submitted By: tajainea

Fan Theory: I think Danny’s father is still alive and Danny is covering, whether his father killed Regina or not. It’s possible since his body hasn’t been recovered. So until they find his body or evidence that he’s dead I’m going to stick with my theory that Danny’s dad killed Regina to protect his friend.

Recap S1 E3: PSA de Résistance

ep3 pc1The episode opens with Lacey and her friends working on a school play directed by Phoebe for sobriety awareness. It’s a pretty bad play and Lacey’s friends are misbehaving.

At the diner Jo and Rico are studying when Danny arrives. Rico mentions he and Jo have the highest GPA in school but don’t really do anything but study and Danny suggests they’re not getting the full high school experience. They also discuss who might have some information on Regina and Danny suggests he try talking to Lacey.

Lacey is nervous about having to give a statement to the police tomorrow. Archie mentions he was home the night of Regina’s party/murder, resting for a big game.

Tess Masterson is upset that she’s lost her art studio downtown, but her husband suggests they just clear out the garage for her and offers to help her that night. Kyle mentions that he’s going to go talk to Karen about the photo of Tara that Tess had seen at the house. Tess mentions that Tara looked pissed off in the photo and Kyle comments that she always looked pissed off.

Danny tries to talk to Lacey in school and win her over but Archie comes along and is very rude to him and walks off with Lacey.

Kyle shows up at the Desai house and apologies to Karen for the dinner but he mentions the photo being moved during the dinner and Karen gets mad and shuts the door.

During class, a girl named Gina announces she wants to switch lab partners, because she hooked up with her current partner Scott and he never called her back. Jo volunteers to switch and becomes partners with Scott and Gina starts working with Rico. Rico is upset with Jo, but she says she just wants to try something new.

Danny tries to talk to Archie and make peace but Archie accuses him of having a crush on Lacey

Lacey gives her statement to Kyle. She initially lies about spending the night at Danny’s but Kyle tells her he already knows. She says she was asleep between midnight and six twenty in the morning.ep3 pc2

Lacey is furious at Danny, because she believes he told Kyle about her sleeping over. Even though he says it must have been his mom who told, she doesn’t believe him and tells him to stay out of her life.

Danny is upset but Jo suggests that he volunteer to help with the sobriety event, since Lacey will be there, and Jo also offers to volunteer with him. Phoebe puts them in charge of helping create a public service announcement video about the dangers of drinking.

Kyle talks to his deputy Sandy about Tara Desai’s necklace. He’s trying to find a picture of it because while he believes it to be the same one Regina was wearing, he can’t prove it. He states that the necklace was in Tara’s purse when Danny killed her and so is not in any of the crime scene photos. He realizes it might appear in one of the photos used to try and sell the house.

Backstage Jo overhears Scott complaining about Gina and he also mentions that the only reason he hooked up with her was because she gave him a ride after he lent his car to Archie.

After the cast is very dismissive of the play, Phoebe gets upset and storms off. Danny rewrites the play and he and Jo take it to Phoebe who likes it and agrees to cast Jo as the lead.

Kyle comes home late and Tess is a little hurt he forgot about helping her clean the garage but tells him she understands how important the case is to him.

Jo shows up late at the diner to study with Rico and he’s hurt thinking she’s bored with him and he leaves.

When Danny comes home Karen confronts him about moving the photo. He lies and says he didn’t and in turn confronts her for telling Kyle about Lacey and yells at her that he doesn’t need protecting.

Lacey likes the new play Danny’s written, while her friend Sarita is angry that she’s been cut out of it and put in charge of the PSA. Archie accuses Danny of manipulating people.

Kyle gets the realtor photos of the Desai house but finds that all the personal family photos had been removed for the house showings.

ep3 pc3A couple of minutes before the play is set to start, Archie walks out, angry that Danny is using it to get closer to Lacey, and Danny takes his part. The play opens, staring Danny, Jo and Lacey. The play deals with living with the past and forgiving where forgetting is impossible. Danny has clearly used it to speak to Lacey, and she very moved.

After the play the PSA is shown, but Sarita has filled it with video of Jo getting drunk at Regina’s party. Rico turns off the video and follows an upset Jo outside.

Lacey snaps at Sarita for making the video and then talks to Danny. He suggests she talk to Jo but she says it’s not that simple. She then demands to know what he wants from her. He takes a step closer to her and they share a brief moment before she storms off.

Rico and Jo reconcile. She says she loved they’re time together but she doesn’t want to go back to just trying to be invisible. She admits for the past five years she’s been afraid to let people see her, but she wants him to join her in her new approach to life. They go off to the diner together.

Danny tells Archie he’s right and that he’ll never be friends with Lacey again but asks Archie to tolerate him and not always call him a freak and psycho, saying he just wants to fit in. Archie says he’ll never fit in and leaves. Danny notices that door to the athletic department and smiles.

Kyle comes home and tells Tess that nothing is more important to him then her and he starts helping clear out the garage.

ep3 pc4

Karen is flipping through a photo album, in which every picture of Tara has been removed, when Danny comes home and tells her he joined the soccer team. Karen confronts him about getting rid of all the photos. He says he did it because it was morbid to keep them around, that he’s trying to start over and they reminded him of what he has done. She tells him she knows about Regina having the necklace and asks what he’s hiding. He admits that he had was scared when Kyle showed him the photo of the necklace and knew how bad it looked, but claims he doesn’t know where the necklace is now. He begs her to believe him, saying he needs her too. She hugs him and tells him she does.

Back at the diner Rico and Jo are talking. He mentions that Gina told him she hooked up with Scott on the night of Regina’s party. Jo remembers Scott mentioning that Archie had borrowed the car the night of the hook up and realizes that means Archie has lied about being home the night of the murder.

As Kyle is cleaning up the garage he finds some old pictures of Jo. He realizes Tara is in one of them and that he now has a photo of her wearing the necklace…

Lacey Porter: Suspect?

Lacey-3There’s something about Lacey that really draws me to her as a suspect. If one of the core three is guilty, I’m inclined to suspect her the most.I have a very hard time of buying either Danny or Jo as Regina’s killer, and while I’m not completely sold on Lacey as guilty either, she would definitely be in my top three suspects list.

But first to start off discussing her as the possible killer of Tara Desai:

First off, if Danny is covering for anyone in the murder of his aunt, Lacey so far is my top choice. Of course we’re only two episodes in, maybe in another two Danny and Lacey will have a conversation that will completely clear her. So far however only Danny and Jo have had conversations that would make no sense if he were covering for Jo, but he and Lacey interestingly enough haven’t.

Furthermore the show has shown there’s some attraction between the two. In the pilot episode for example they had an almost almost-kiss. What’s connecting these two specially? Why is Lacey more open to him then she has been to Jo in the past five years? Is it because the two are the only ones who share the biggest secret of their lives, the truth of Tara Desai’s murder?

Also, as I’ve mentioned before, the opening scene of the pilot does not exclude either Lacey or Jo as suspects in the aunt’s killing. Firstly because we saw it in the form of Jo’s dream and as such it’s unreliable (I’d love to see Lacey’s version of that day), and secondly we have no idea what was happening before the two started playing on the swing set. Maybe they’d only been on the swings a few minutes. Maybe Lacey had been inside before then? Maybe she killed the aunt and left Danny alone in the house with the body?

Now as for Lacey possibly being Regina’s killer:

I’m honestly not sure I can really see this. And yet at the same time a part of me thinks it would make a lot of sense if Lacey was really a sociopath. We know she broke off her friendship with Jo and made herself into one of popular crowd, so we already know that to a certain extent she can adapt to the situation on hand and fit in with different groups of people. Which gives us more evidence that she might be a sociopath (able to mimic human emotions) than any other character in the show so far.

A possible motive for her murdering Regina isn’t obvious to me, unless she killed Tara Desai as well, and Regina really did know this, and Lacey felt she had to kill Regina to protect the truth. Given Phoebe’s story of why her friendship with Regina broke up, Regina doesn’t seem like the kind of person you want to trust with your secrets nor someone whose friendship you can rely on to stay strong.

I’m definitely not committed to Lacey as guilty of murder. But she’s certainly an interesting suspect.
